School of Chiropractic and Sports Science

SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS

The School of Chiropractic and Sports Science is making available 3 scholarships to the value of $1500 each, to undertake a 6 week research project in the School over the summer break. Entry is open to all students enrolled in units in the School who have successfully completed at least 2 years of their undergraduate degree.

GENERAL INFORMATION
This document provides information for students who wish to undertake a Summer Scholarship within the School.

OBJECTIVES
The Summer Scholarships have been introduced to expose students to a given field of research and/or study and are not intended as a summer job. Students must have an intention to pursue research as a career option (either full time or part time) to be considered eligible.

PROCEDURES
The scholarships are open to Murdoch University students enrolled in a Chiropractic Science or Bachelor of Chiropractic Degree. The work will usually be undertaken in the School or under the principle supervision of a staff member from the School of Chiropractic and Sports Science.  To initiate an application, students may approach a supervisor within a Murdoch University School to discuss a project directly, or they may choose from (but not limited to) a list of potential projects listed on the School Research Web page.

Application is made via submission of the Application Form to the Chiropractic School Research Committee (c/o Colette Larsen, Room 1.014, Economics, Commerce and Law Building, Murdoch University). Selection for the three scholarships will be by open competition, based on the students’ academic record, intention to undertake honours and the merit of the proposal. Applications will be ranked and a final decision reached by the Faculty Research Committee or its representatives.

TENURE
The period of tenure of a Summer Scholarship shall be a minimum of six weeks. The period of tenure may be broken in two parts to allow for the Christmas period when the University is closed. Summer Scholarships should normally be approved for commencement early December and are expected to conclude mid February. Tenure beyond the commencement date of the first semester should not be approved.

ADMINISTRATION
The School of Chiropractic and Sports Science will undertake advertising, selection, forwarding letters of offer, acknowledging acceptance of offers. The Research Degrees and Scholarships Office will be responsible for the administration of the Scholarships.

Arrangements for payment must be organised through the Research Degrees and Scholarships office, as either regular instalments or the full amount at the completion of the scholarship.
The acceptance of offer includes a proviso that the candidate has read and understood the general conditions that apply to Summer-Scholarships as described in Regulations, as well as any specific conditions contained in the letter of offer.

OBLIGATIONS
Students will be requested to provide, within thirty days of the expiry of the scholarship, a 250 word structured abstract as a written report of their activities or research project undertaken during the term of the award. Students also agree to complete a Paper or Poster (later in the year) of their work for submission to a research forum.

AUSTUDY
Unless otherwise specified, scholarship benefits are regarded as income in determining the level of AUSTUDY benefits and may cause an AUSTUDY grantee's total income to exceed the current means test level.
