Postgraduate Certificate in Neuromusculoskeletal Rehabilitation (PgCertNeurRehab)

Course code: C1042

Location: Murdoch campus
Availability: External
Duration: 1 semester full-time or part-time equivalent

Neuromusculoskeletal Rehabilitation is a rapidly growing branch of the healing arts concerned with the psychosocial aspects, pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy and prophylaxis of patho-physiological disturbances, patho-mechanical states, pain syndromes and neuro-physiological effects related to the muscles, fasciae and associated soft tissues, joints and neurological structures of the body. The practitioner of Neuromusculoskeletal Rehabilitation is a health professional who gives particular attention to the relationship of muscles and fasciae to structural and neurological aspects of the body in health and disease and is educated in the relevant basic and clinical sciences as well as in related humanities. They make a significant contribution to the fields of chronic pain control and management, behavioural modification, sports injury management, personal training in health maintenance and the management of acute and chronic effects of accidents and rehabilitation.

Employment Prospects: Most of the participants in the course will already be employed, many in their own practices. This course will value-add to the practitioners’ qualifications and provide an extension of their practice into the rehabilitation area.

Admission Requirements: Applicants for admission must normally hold a first professional, Bachelor's (or Master's) degree in chiropractic and have one year of clinical experience. Preparation through qualification in other health disciplines may be considered.

Special Requirements: The course will be offered part-time in order to meet the needs of healthcare practitioners who have to maintain their practices and will attend in study blocks. The course will be offered at times and in ways that best suit groups of students.

Professional Recognition: Australasian Council on Chiropractic Education (National accrediting body), Australasian chiropractic statutory registration boards, Australasian professional associations (CAA, COCA, NZCA).

Main research areas: Neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation, chronic pain control and management, behavioural modification and sports injury management.

Facilitating Learning: Learning will be facilitated through the use of multimedia Directed Self-Learning packs (DSL) to study the theoretical content and will be reinforced through experiential practicals, tutorials and clinical practicals. DSL packs provide very detailed guidance and draw extensively on the current literature to construct 'programmed readers' that are keyed to the unit outcomes and content and to performance indicators. In addition they provide student guidance through study guides that identify and address principles relating to the various aspects of the learning, and through case studies and self-test questions linked to the assessment criteria listed in the unit descriptors. Practical and tutorial sessions are mediated through the use of laboratory skills and case-solving exercises described in the study guides, and keyed to the unit descriptors through the intensive workshops.
